Description
It’s my very hush-hush, private birthday party fundraiser for the KC Rainbow Tour.

Jewel Box queens
In honor of Kansas City’s iconic, drag history, this event is called Private Birthday Party because back in the drag parties and performances would be held in bars and underground spaces that weren’t necessarily “Gay bars”. In order to safely gather in drag, often a sign reading “Private Birthday Party” was hung on the door to discourage anyone entering who wasn’t invited to the party.
You’re invited to attend Joel’s Private Birthday Party on Saturday, April 29, 2023. Time and location details will be announced soon.
Costumes are strongly encouraged but not required. Yes, I’ll be in vintage drag for this party! There will be plenty of photo opportunities as well.

The Kansas City Rainbow Tour is a self-guided, app-narrated, driving tour of Kansas City’s rich LGBTQ+ history. Years before the Stonewall Riots erupted, The Gay Rights movement was conceived in Kansas City.
The KC Rainbow Tour utilizes the VoiceMap app to guide you on a driving tour of approximately 12 specific historic destinations with reference to over 20 more. The 60-90 minute tour will begin near UMKC and wind its way Northward with the final stop at the Kansas City Museum in Kansas City’s historic Northeast. As you drive the tour you’ll hear stories and voices from past and present as you revisit the colorful history of our rainbow community.
The KC Rainbow Tour Launch Party is Saturday, June 3 at the Kansas City Museum.
Your ticket purchase to Joel’s Private Birthday Party will help fund the tour for years to come.
